You should be careful giving out which of these?

A. Your date of birth
B. Your social security number
C. Your identification cards
D. All of the above

Just like chemical substances have certain properties that help tell what they are, you have characteristics and personal information that make up your identity. Keep important personal information about you safe, just like money or your favorite toy or video game. People can steal and misuse your personal information. They can commit crimes while pretending to be you. This is called identity theft.

Be extra careful when you're on the Internet, and never give out your personal information online, especially anything that could tell others your location or identity. And only visit sites that your parents or other trusted adults have approved.

Keeping your personal information safe will also help protect your credit history as you get older. This is important when you want to buy a car or a house or apply for a credit card. Click here to learn more about credit.

The Buzz Station

Get the buzz about your social security number:

  • The first social security card was designed in 1936 by Fred Happel of Albany, N.Y. He got $60 for his work.
  • Social security numbers are not given out serially. That means the first number ever issued was not the lowest and the latest number issued may not be the highest.
  • Social security numbers are not reassigned after people die.
